How to use weed control fabric properly

Weed control fabric is the most efficient and easy way to control weeds for many farmers and agricultural technicians who grow perennial crops. It prevents weed seeds from germinating and growing roots out of the ground. Since this fabric is relatively breathable, it allows water, air, and some nutrients to flow into the soil, providing crops with the nutrients they need.

In this article, EPP Vietnam will guide you on how to use weed control fabric properly. We'll also discuss the importance of using weed control fabric in clean agriculture and the fabric's benefits.

Why Should You Use Weed Control Fabric in Clean Agriculture?

- In farms and gardens, the overgrowth of weeds can be harmful and can even reduce the yield of crops, vegetables, and fruit trees.

- Specialized crop farms also emphasize the aesthetic aspect, where an excessive amount of weeds can create an unsightly image.

- Therefore, using weed control fabric over the surface of the ground or soil can prevent and limit the growth of weeds and regulate the soil's moisture.

Benefits of Weed Control Fabric in Practice

* Weed control:

  • The fabric prevents weed seeds from germinating and growing.

  • Thanks to the application of UV-resistant coatings, it can prevent sunlight from shining onto the ground surface, making it difficult for the grass seeds to photosynthesize and germinate, leading to the gradual death of the grass

* Moisture balance:

  • The tightly woven, high-quality PP fibers used in the fabric have small gaps, providing better efficiency.

  • Water molecules can penetrate through the fabric, so it won't accumulate on the surface or dry out the soil.

* Pest and fungi control:

Since most pests and fungi originate from the soil, covering the surface of the ground with weed control fabric eliminates their chances of growing.

How to Use Weed Control Fabric Properly

Weed control fabric provides significant benefits for farmers, but not everyone knows how to use it properly. Let's go over some guidelines to get you started:

Prepare the following tools:

Garden hoe.

Steel rake.

Utility knife.

Hammer.

Materials.

Ground cover or other soil cover (optional).

Weed barrier fabric.

Fabric pins to hold the weed barrier fabric in place.

Plants (optional).

Instructions:

This is a tutorial on how to use a weed barrier fabric in your garden.

Removing all existing vegetation and debris:

  • Use a garden hoe, shovel, or other tool to remove all weeds, debris, and other vegetation.

  • Dig deep enough to remove the roots of the weeds, and consider using mulch to prevent any remaining roots from growing.

Cleaning and leveling the soil:

  •  Use a tool to clear away any remaining debris and weeds.

  • If necessary, use your hands to pull any remaining weeds by the roots. Also, clear away any stones or sharp objects that could damage the weed barrier fabric.

  • Continue until the soil surface is smooth and level for easier installation of the fabric.

Laying down the weed barrier fabric:

  • Lay the weed barrier fabric parallel to the length of the area you want to cover.

  • Cut the fabric off the roll, if necessary, with a sharp utility knife (be sure to change the blade frequently to keep it sharp).

  •  If the area to be covered is wide, the fabric pieces should overlap at least 15cm.

  • Manufacturers of weed barrier fabric may suggest 8cm overlap, but 15cm is better.

  • If the fabric has different sides (such as a shiny side and a black side), make sure to lay the fabric with the appropriate side facing up, as indicated on the packaging.

  • Use rocks or other heavy objects to temporarily weigh down the fabric if necessary.

Securing the fabric with fabric pins:

  • Confirm that the weed barrier fabric is in the correct position for planting, and then secure it with horizontal fabric pins, using a hammer to pound the pins into the ground more easily.

  • Pull a pin about every 1 meter or more, along the edges and connecting lines and as needed in the interior.

  • Cut the fabric along the edges, if necessary.

Planting through the weed barrier fabric:

  • First, determine the location for planting, and then use a utility knife to cut an X-shaped hole in the fabric. Cut from the outside in towards the center and cut an area large enough to plant.

  • The fewer and smaller holes you make in the fabric, the better. Pull the flaps to one side to dig the hole and dump the soil into a wheelbarrow or other area instead of onto the fabric.

  • Plant the plants, fill in the soil around the roots, and lightly till the soil to remove any air pockets. Place 4 pieces of fabric snugly around the base of the plant to keep the fabric from moving in the wind or with watering.
